The Stroud Mural: A Part Of Our History

Painted by Penetang-based mural artist Sonja Rathke and installed on the Stroud Arena in 2010, the mural depicting the village of Stroud circa 1925 has been an important piece of public art in the Town of Innisfil. Created in nine separate segments, the artist drew inspiration from a number of historical photos of Stroud and included numerous recognizable landmarks and buildings like Chantler's Store and Shering's Garage/the Stroud Garage.

Unfortunately, the wood frame and panels have become weathered and waterlogged over time, causing damage to both the building and the art. In conjunction with the Innisfil Historical Society and with the knowledge and consent of the artist, the mural was carefully removed on Thursday, November 25, 2021 and observed by members of the IHS. Happily, the nine panels survived intact and will be receiving some much needed care over the winter with the hope that it can be restored and either returned to the building or displayed in a new location. No matter what, the painting will live on its digital form right here in our database and is certain to have a long life in new and exciting ways in the future!

If you're looking to enjoy other public art around Town, be sure to hunt down the utility boxes that were wrapped to celebrate Innisfil's Bicentennial, or take a peek at the new mural painted on the ramp connecting Adams Rd. with Simcoe Blvd.
